| Richard James Cardinal Cushing was born in South Boston to Patrick and Mary Cushing on Aug. 25, 1895. After graduating from Boston College and St. John’s Seminary, he was ordained a priest in 1921. In 1922, Fr. Cushing was appointed Assistant Director for the Propagation of the Faith where he began a lifelong love for the missions. Known as the Bishop of the Missions, Cushing built a foundation of support that has led to the Boston office of the Pontifical Mission Societies status as one of the largest donors to the missions in the world |
