Pray the World Mission Rosary

Each decade of that world mission rosary calls to mind an area where the church continues her evangelizing mission: green for the forests and grasslands of Africa; blue for the ocean surrounding the Islands of the Pacific; white symbolizing Europe, the seat of the holy father, shepherd of the world; red calling to mind the fire of faith that brought missionaries to the Americas, and yellow, the morning light of the east, for Asia.

To mark the beginning of Lent in 1951, then-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, our National Director, announced on his famous radio show that he was creating a new version of the rosary. “We must pray,” said Sheen, “and not for ourselves, but for the world. To this end, I have designed the World Mission Rosary. Each of the five decades is of a different color to represent the continents.”

As Sheen described it, the colors reflect different parts of the world that need our prayers.

Green is for the forests and grasslands of Africa; red is for the fire of the faith brought to the Americas by missionaries; white is for Europe, home of the Holy Father; blue is for Oceania, the pacific island countries; and yellow is for Asia, where the sun rises first, in the east.

Please join us in praying for the spread of the Gospel to the ends of the earth!
